Eligibility

Candidate eligibility & age was listed below. So, those who want to pursue a Bar Exam in Utah must follow the norms below.

  • Examinees have been admitted by exam to the bar in another US jurisdiction that allows reciprocal admission of Utah attorneys is a member in good standing.
  • Be at least age 21.
  • Have to hold JD from an ABA-approved law school
  • Must pass the MPRE with a score of at least 86.

Admission Process

  • Have to register first & create an ILG account by clicking register & filling out the registration form.
  • After login into your account, select your application type & click “Apply”.
  • Character & Fitness Committee Action.

PROCESS-MOTION FOR ACCESS. There are four Motions for Admission submitted by the Utah Supreme Court each year in February May, June, August and October. After the applicant is approved through the Admissions Office, there are numerous steps an application has to go through before an applicant can be able to take the attorney Oath.

  • Admissions is the finalization of those applicants qualified for admission (done in the month prior to the next motion).
  • The Bar’s Licensing Department then sends an email to those who are on the list of eligible applicants. The email provides information on the location and method of payment for licensing fees as well as the deadline at which fees must be paid. Please check your email spam folder for an email from [email protected] (especially if you have a gmail account). If you do not respond by the deadline, you’ll be waiting for the next motion is due to be accepted.
  • If the deadline for Licensing is past the list of applicants that are eligible to be admitted who have paid the fees is submitted by the Bar Commission for their approval.
  • The Bar Commission then sends over the final Motion for Admission list to the Utah Supreme Court for the Court’s approval.
  • The Utah Supreme Court signs the Motion for Admission and sets an appointment for the Licensing Sworn-In Ceremony for those wishing to swear in an Attorney Oath.

  • Application filing deadline date – October 1
  • Late filing deadline date – October 15 (include a $100 late fee)

Utah Scoring & Grading

In order to pass the Utah Bar Exam, the candidate must score at least 270. This equates to 135, based on the MBE’s 200 points scale. And, the scores of the exam section are weighted as follows: MBE 50%, MPT 20% & MEE 30%.

Utah Bar Exam is a 2-day exam. Day 1 offers six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test Questions (MPT). Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), 200 questions, multiple-choice exam.

UBE scores are only valid if transferred to the Utah State Brar directly from the MPRE test authority. Candidates have to apply to sit for the UBE. But Utah Bar must receive your UBE transfer score no later than 9 months after you file your application.
