Qualification for Montana Bar Exam Admission

Below are the qualification details of Montana Bar Exam Admission:

  • A JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • The Commission on Character & Fitness has certified you.
  • You have submitted a qualifying MPRE score.
  • You have submitted a qualifying UBE score (either by transfer or exam) or met the requirements for admission in motion.
  • Participated in the Montana Law Seminar. MLS Registration Form
  • You have paid your license tax, and all dues to Montana State Bar.

Application for Admission:

All applicants must fill out the online NCBE Application to Montana, regardless of whether they are applying for admission via exam, transfer of UBE scores, or seeking admission on a motion basis. The Montana Bar Admissions office must receive a signed application along with the Montana Application Cover Page and all required documents from the Montana Application Checklist. The NCBE must receive a second signed application along with the investigation fee.

Register & Pay for the MLS & UBE:

Registration for the Montana Law Seminar or the Uniform Bar Exam is open only to the applicants to the Montana Bar. Fees are nor refundable; applicants should have to until they have been certified by the Commission on Fitness & Character before submitting the Fee. So, please do register & pay the online or send a check to The State Bar of Montana at PO Box 577, Helena, MT 59624.

Scoring & Grading

To pass the Montana bar exam you need to score at least 266. Based on the 200-point scale of MBE, this equates to 133. The following weightings are applied to the exam sections: MEE 30% MPT 20% and MBE 50%. The Montana bar exam results are available eight weeks after the exam.

  • Montana will accept the transfer of a score of 266 or more from a qualified UBE exam within three years of the date of application.
  • An MPRE score of 80 or more is better earned within 3 years of your application date isn’t required before sitting for the UBE but is required before admission to the Montana Bar.

Montana Law Seminar (MLS):

Note: Montana Law Seminar will be held exclusively via Zoom on Feb 24th, 2022. And, specific information will be e-mailed to you after you’ve registered. All applicants, Montana has pleased, that the applicants should attend the Montana Law Seminar (MLS), which is offered the Thursday following the Feb & July Bar Exam.

Montana Bar Examination

Montana Bar students should be qualified in the following exam called MPRE with a score of at least 80 marks. MPRE is a 60 question, multiple choice developed by the National Conference Bar Examiners (NCBE). It is a 2 hours exam administrated online by the NCBE’s test contractors.

To pay the application fee, applicants need to send a check or money order with the completed application or pay application fee online & along with that they need to mail a copy of the confirmation payment with completed application.

Note: A Separate application fee will be charged for the NCBE Character & Fitness Application. NCBE contains categories for Law Student Registration, Foreign Educated and Foreign-Licensed Attorneys. Montana does not accept applications from law students in the early stages of their studies and does not recognize foreign applicants. All applicants must have a JD from an ABA-accredited school.

Any applicant who has any physical, medical, or cognitive disability may request a bar examination under reasonable conditions to accommodate your needs. You must have to request by submitting the Request for Testing Accommodation forms. Applicants who claim accommodation & disability on the bar examination must submit a request for the accommodation with supporting documents by the application deadline. Accommodation requests that are not received by the deadline for filing will not be accepted, except in cases where the disability occurred after the deadline.

Nursing Mother Seeking Accommodation
Despite the fact that breastfeeding is not defined as a disability by the ADA, it is not to be considered for one of the purposes of granting accommodations, the board will afford to breastfeed the applicant’s accommodation in a manner consistent with public policy & law. So, those seeking such accommodation shall submit a letter request for breastfeeding accommodation to the Bar Admission Administrators by the filing deadlines for the relevant Uniform Bar Exam administration stating the type of accommodation desired. A Doctor’s statement need not be submitted with the request but may be asked for by the board at a later date. Depending upon each applicant’s request & such accommodations are medically necessary for the health of the applicants or their infant. Montana Bar Exam Format

Montana Bar Exam is a 2-day UBE Exam.

Day 1 – Six 30 Min Multistate Essay Exam Questions (MEE in the AM) & Two 90 Min Multistate Performance Test Questions (MPT in the PM).

Day 2 – Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) contains 200 questions, multiple choice exam. (100 Questions in the AM & 100 Questions in the PM.)

The admitted applicant must notify the Bar Admissions administrator if he or she ceases to work for the qualifying employer, or if he or she moves from emeritus status to active status within the two-year period of the fee waiver. He or she must pay the waived fees or surrender admission to the State Bar of Montana.
